Study program structure and content
At the center of art history are visual objects. "Learning to see" – the ability to visually analyze works of art – is therefore an important foundation for studying art history. In addition, as is customary for any academic discipline, students learn the fundamentals of scholarly research and writing. These are the essential tools for independently researching historical source material and critically engaging with current academic literature. The research subjects are analyzed and interpreted based on this. A particular focus in the program is on working with originals on site.

Get a glimpse of how the study program works:
In your studies, you attend lectures every semester from the very beginning, given by professors to a large group of students in weekly presentations. These lectures provide an introduction to a specific topic area, but current research questions are also presented and explored in depth.
Seminars are the type of course you will attend most frequently in your studies. Active participation is required in these courses. You typically complete your assessments through presentations and academic term papers.
Term papers are completed independently, as direct contact time in classes only accounts for a small portion of the coursework. Most of your time will be spent independently preparing and reviewing courses, conducting research in libraries, and practicing academic writing and analysis.
In addition to seminars and lectures, the study of art history also includes practical exercises.
During excursions, topics and questions are discussed and explored in depth using original objects.
