Study program structure and content
In the Master's program, students have a great deal of freedom when selecting their specializations. There are no mandatory courses. However, students are required to select three of the following seven specialization modules, which provide general foundational skills:
- Construction and material
- Geographic Information Systems and BIM
- Statistics and optimization
- Project planning and project management
- Fundamentals of modeling for continuous structures and frame structures
- Finite elements
- AI for engineers
In addition, students must select advanced and specialization modules. The specialization modules provide specific knowledge in the various fields of civil engineering. The specialized modules that build on this foundation explore individual aspects in greater depth.

Focus areas and specialization
The Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Stuttgart addresses the engineering, social, and environmental challenges of this century with a vision of “Sustainable Engineering Design.” In this context, four areas of specialization have been developed that combine a focus on fundamentals with in-depth, application-oriented study:
In the field of structural engineering, the behavior of structures and building materials under mechanical, climatic, and time-dependent loads is comprehensively analyzed. The focus is on the structural integrity, functionality, durability, and sustainability of structures. From the initial design concept through structural analysis to final construction, buildings are considered as an integrated whole. This approach also takes into account the close integration of engineering and architecture in order to develop solutions that are functional, cost-effective, and aesthetically sophisticated.
Computational methods focuses on the development, improvement, and application of modern computer-based simulation and computational methods. The goal is to accurately model and predict complex physical processes in materials science, structural engineering, environmental science, and biomechanics. To this end, numerical models are developed, algorithms are optimized, and large amounts of data are analyzed. These methods make it possible to analyze engineering problems virtually, compare different options efficiently, and develop innovative solutions for complex systems.
Transportation systems focus area centers on the planning, design, and optimization of transportation and infrastructure processes. This process takes into account technical, economic, and social aspects. In addition to traditional structural engineering issues, the study also analyzes mobility patterns, logistics processes, and business-related factors. A particular focus is placed on modeling and integrating various modes of transportation in order to develop efficient, safe, and sustainable mobility systems.
Water and environment focuses on the conservation and sustainable use of water resources, as well as the protection of natural ecosystems. Technical and mathematical models are developed to describe hydrological and hydraulic processes in surface waters and groundwater. The goal is to gain a better understanding of material and water flows, minimize environmental impacts, and develop climate-resilient strategies for water management and environmental protection. Aspects of resource efficiency and integrated environmental management also play a key role in this context.
