Study program structure and content
In the Social Sciences study program, you learn to analyze the behavior of groups, organizations, and individuals: What influences their actions, and how do they, in turn, impact their social and political environment? Depending on the research question, you examine the causes and effects of social action or the role of societal structures. The program covers the areas of sociology, political science, and social science methods and statistics. The focus is on topics such as democracy, participation, transnational socialization, and sociotechnical transformation processes. For this, you learn a broad range of methods—from surveys and interviews to media analysis.
The early semesters
At the beginning of your studies, you acquire fundamentals in political science, sociology, theory, and academic research skills. From the start, you engage in practical work with qualitative and quantitative research methods including survey design, interview analysis, and statistical software. This is taught in a practical, applied manner.
Your studies
As the program progresses, you gain insights into the institute's areas of specialization. Elective modules allow you to pursue your personal interests and deepen specific topics, up to choosing the subject of your final thesis. Your methodological knowledge is continuously expanded and applied in practice, allowing you, for example, to independently use it to answer your own research questions in your final thesis.
