Study program structure and content
At the beginning of your studies, the focus will be on intensive language training so that you can express yourself spontaneously and fluently in French (target proficiency corresponds to level C2). You will also attend courses on the following topics:
- Linguistics: In this study program, you will learn how language works in general – from sounds and sentence structure to cognitive aspects. At the same time, you will explore the language-specific features of French in greater depth.
- Literature and Cultural Studies: In this field, you will explore French-language literature from the past to the present, as well as topics such as theater, magic in literature, and media analysis in a cultural context.
- Subject didactics: Subject didactics prepares you for teaching French – with theoretical foundations and practical approaches to planning, conducting, and reflecting on lessons. It bridges the gap between specialist science, educational science, and practical experience in schools.
This teaching qualification also includes several modules from the field of educational sciences that deal with issues of education and training. In addition, you will complete a three-week orientation internship at a school during your studies.

Get a glimpse of how the study program works:
As part of your foreign language studies, you will complete many practical language exercises right from the beginning of your studies. This will help you improve and deepen your language skills. The exercises can take various forms, from written or oral expression to vocabulary exercises, grammar exercises, and translation exercises.
In addition, during the first semesters you will attend lectures that are mostly introductory or provide a general overview. Here, a lecturer presents the most important content to a large group of students.
Lectures are accompanied by tutorials and exercises. The topics covered in the lecture are explored in greater depth, and you will be guided in applying the methods you have learned independently.
Seminars are the most common type of course as you progress in your studies. Your active participation is required here. Academic topics are explored in groups roughly the size of a school class, guided by a university lecturer.
Seminars are usually more specific than lectures and allow you to deepen your knowledge in these areas and specialize individually in certain topics. Common forms of performance assessment in seminars include presentations, written examinations, and academic papers.
Homework assignments are completed independently. This is because direct contact time in classes only accounts for a small part of the course. You will spend much of your time independently preparing for and reviewing courses, conducting research in libraries and databases, and honing your skills in academic writing or empirical language analysis.
