Study program structure and content
The English program in Stuttgart covers a wide range of topics – from traditional subjects such as British and American literary history, drama, the structure of the English language, language variation, and second language acquisition, to current developments, fields of research, and interdisciplinary approaches.
These include, for example, postcolonial studies; Brexit and academia; film and television studies; cognitive literary studies; and computer-assisted analysis of digitized texts, as well as theoretical and empirical research in syntax, phonology, and semantics; heritage languages; second language acquisition; and language processing.
Educational sciences
The teaching degree includes several modules in educational sciences, which address questions of upbringing and education. In addition, you complete a three-week orientation internship at a school during your studies.

Get a glimpse of how the study program works:
In the first semesters, you will attend a relatively large number of lectures, most of which are introductory, or offer a general overview. Here, a lecturer presents the most important content to a large group of students.
Lectures are accompanied by exercises or tutorials. The topics covered in the lecture are explored in greater depth, and you will be guided in applying the methods you have learned independently.
Seminars are the most common type of course as you progress in your studies. Your active participation is required here. Academic topics are explored in groups roughly the size of a school class, guided by a university lecturer.
Seminars are usually more specific than lectures and allow you to deepen your knowledge in these areas and specialize individually in certain topics. Common forms of performance assessment in seminars include presentations, written examinations, and academic papers.
Term papers are completed independently, as direct contact time in classes only accounts for a small portion of the coursework. You will spend much of your time independently preparing for and reviewing courses, conducting research in libraries and databases, and honing your skills in academic writing or empirical language analysis.
