Materials Science

Materials Science (MaWi) is the discipline in which materials are researched and developed from a scientific perspective. It is one of the key enabling technologies of the 21st century:

  • New lightweight materials, high-temperature materials, or high-performance magnets increase the efficiency of vehicles, turbines, and engines.
  • Innovative electrode materials increase the lifespan and storage capacity of batteries.
  • Powerful smartphones and computers are only possible thanks to semiconductor materials with extreme purity and precise control of their atomic structure.
  • Magnetic properties can be optimized to produce more powerful and lighter electric motors.

A Materials Science (MaWi) degree enables you to help shape future solutions across a wide range of fields.

Good to know

  • Small and close-knit program with approximately 30–50 students.
  • Excellent career opportunities: Instead of having to choose between physics or chemistry, the Materials Science (MaWi) program offers you an interdisciplinary mathematical and scientific education, which provides excellent career prospects in academia and industry after completing a master's degree or doctoral degree studies.
  • Extensive collaborations with the Max Planck Institutes: The Institute for Materials Science has two locations – one on the University of Stuttgart campus and one on the Max Planck campus in Stuttgart-Büsnau. The two locations are just a few kilometers apart. The collaboration ensures a close connection between research and teaching. For example, it is possible to use research infrastructure from both institutions.
  • Buddy or mentoring program: The International Office offers two support programs to international students who are about to start their studies at the University of Stuttgart. Click here to find out more!
  • Learning German: Find out how to learn German before and during your studies and read our tips on fun ways to practice. Click here to find out more!
  • Student Counseling Center (ZSB): The ZSB provides you with information and advice to help you choose the right study program, supports you in starting your studies and helps you to succeed. Click here to find out more!
  • Advice and assistance: Finding the right contact person is not always easy. Click here to find the responsible persons for various issues.
  • MINT Kolleg Baden-Württemberg: The MINT Kolleg prepares you for a degree program in STEM subjects (mathematics, computer science, natural sciences, engineering). It also offers support for students in the introductory phase of their studies. Click here to find out more!
  • Do you want to study abroad for a semester? During your Bachelor's study program, you have many options to gain international experience. Exchange programs, partner universities and scholarships make it easier to go abroad. Find out more about your options!
