Study program structure and content

The Master’s program offers you a high degree of flexibility in choosing your courses.

Compulsory modules:

  • Organic synthesis
  • Inorganic synthesis
  • Physical chemistry
  • Technical chemistry and biochemistry

You will choose one lecture and one laboratory course from the following four areas:

  • Biochemistry
  • Polymer chemistry
  • Technical chemistry
  • Theoretical chemistry

You can choose your other courses from a wide range of electives based on your interests and areas of specialization. The elective courses allow you to gain specialized knowledge in different fields of chemistry and develop an individual academic profile. Two research internships will give you direct insight into current research at the faculty and provide opportunities to establish academic connections early in your studies.

Focus areas and specializations

Chemistry at the University of Stuttgart combines cutting-edge research with innovative teaching to address modern challenges. Fundamental principles of the natural sciences are combined with modern applications in areas such as sustainability, energy generation, conversion, and storage as well as research into materials for emerging applications. The areas of specialization combine a fundamental understanding with current research questions and practical applications:

This research profile focuses on the development of sustainable chemical synthesis strategies and catalytic processes. A range of homogeneous and heterogeneous approaches from inorganic, organic, bioorganic, and polymer chemistry as well as electrochemistry are used for the efficient production of materials and compounds for future applications.

This research profile focuses on the development, characterization, and investigation of functional materials and molecules with tailored physical and chemical properties for applications in energy generation, conversion, and storage as well as in electronics, medicine, and sustainable material systems.

This field involves the study of biological processes at the molecular level as well as the development of biotechnological methods and biomolecular applications for medicine, pharmacy, and the life sciences.

This research profile covers the theoretical description and computer-based simulation of chemical systems to help you understand, predict, and systematically design molecular structures, properties, and reaction mechanisms.

In addition, research internships are particularly well-suited for stays abroad.
