Areas of Research: Simulation Sciences, Civil Engineering, Materials Science-New Materials-Biomaterials
Thematic Priority: Computer-oriented methods in structural mechanics

Field of Work

The Institute for Structural Mechanics (IBB) is involved in fundamental research into computer-oriented methods in structural mechanics. The focus areas are the technology of finite elements for problems of non-linear structural mechanics. The research field is highly interdisciplinary and is not limited to the area of civil engineering. It also includes projects from the automotive field (e.g. crash simulation) as well as the aerospace sector (simulation of structures made of composite carbon fiber). The IBB team develops its own research software for implementation of algorithms and models developed in-house. The research is mainly financed by third-party funding provided by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Excellence Initiative of the federal and state governments of Germany; some research funding is also received from industry.

Personal Information

Prof. Manfred Bischoff, born in Freudenstadt in 1968, studied civil engineering at the University of Stuttgart. After a period of research at the University of California, Berkeley in 2000, he took up the position of Senior Assistant Professor at the Chair of Structural Analysis at Technical University Munich. In Munich Bischoff then obtained his habilitation and university teaching qualification in the area of structural mechanics in 2005. Manfred Bischoff has been professor of structural mechanics at the University of Stuttgart and head of the institute of the same name (IBB) since April 2006. He won the European Young Scientist Award Euromech in 2000, the Award for Young Scientists in 2008 and the Fellow Award of the International Association for Computational Mechanics (IACM) in 2012.

Bischoff is Member of the directorate of the collaborative research center "Biological Design and Integrative Structures" (SFB-TRR 141) since 2014 and member of the Review Board of Architecture and Civil Engineering of the DFG, FK-410 since 2016. Since 2017 he is also member of the directorate of the collaborative research center "Adaptive Hüllen und Strukturen für die gebaute Umwelt von morgen" (SFB 1244).

Prof. Manfred Bischoff has been a member of the Rectorate for Research and Early Career Researchers since October 2021.
