Study program structure and content
The first semesters
During the first two semesters the program begins with the teaching of foundational knowledge in all three subfields (Linguistics, Medieval Studies, Modern German Literature). Which poetic forms do German authors adopt from ancient, Italian, French, English, or even Japanese literature, and how do they modify them? How do I describe speech sounds, and what needs to happen in the oral and pharyngeal cavities for a particular sound to be produced? How does one study language or literature, and how can one engage with researchers who examined these questions a decade ago in another location?
Your studies
From the third semester onwards, this knowledge is applied and deepened in advanced seminars. Here you can decide for yourself where your interests lie: Would you prefer to interpret Lessing’s dramas and understand his 18th-century theory of drama, or are you more interested in Holocaust literature? In addition, literature history lectures provide you with essential knowledge of German-language literature. The teaching qualification study program includes several modules from educational sciences that deal with questions of upbringing and education. In addition, you will complete a three-week orientation internship at a school during your studies.
