Dyes • Liquid Crystals

My research focusses on materials with a combination liquid crystalline and photophysical properties. Through a systematic investigation of strong acceptor moieties, rigid chromophores, and various electron-donating groups, structure-property relationships have been investigated. The photophysical properties are strongly connected to the ground-state polarity, which can be studied by a variety of methods (UV/Vis absorption, 1H and 13C NMR, DFT calculations, and CV). The use of appropriate substituents induces liquid-crystalline behaviour, and mesogenic properties were investigated by POM, DSC and XRD investigations. By variation of molecular parameters (acceptor, chromophore, and donor), liquid-crystalline and photophysical properties can be influenced. Ideally, it will be possible to tune the mesogenic or optical properties separately.
