Like a phoenix out of the ashes

After the end of the war, the entire staff of the university was dismissed as part of an initial general measure. Yet only a few weeks later Leonhard and three of his assistants could start their work again. At the end of 1945 Leonhard was then dismissed along with around half of the College of Technology's professors on the instructions of the American military government. The remaining assistants continued teaching in Leonhard's name and with his manuscripts. At the same time reconstruction of the institute building was begun as a joint effort by students, assistants and technicians.

From 1947 to 1952 Professor Graner was Full Professor of the Institute for Electrical Systems. It was only after he left due to ill health in 1952 that Leonhard was reappointed. This is probably connected with the fact that Leonhard had been a member of the NSDAP for many years.
