Robert Bosch was a friend of Bach's. The friendship led to the establishment of a Robert Bosch Foundation in 1910, endowed with 1,000,000 marks, which particularly benefited the technical disciplines (the Engineering Laboratory received 350,000 marks and the Materials Testing Institute 100,000 marks). It was Robert Bosch's first major capital foundation.
