For Bach the purpose of studying was to "train independent, free-thinking engineers on the basis of what facts and life teach us". He introduced compulsory one-year work experience in the workshop as a prerequisite for studying, both to ensure that prospective students gathered practical experience, and in the conviction that "engineers must be a role model for workers in all respects" and should not look down on manual workers.
