After working as a senior engineer in Vienna, Bach became the manager of a factory in Bautzen. The company produced steam-powered fire engines, steam engines, pumps and water wheels. His duties included overseeing production, and carrying out construction work and quality controls. A by-product of this work was a patent for a "steam-powered fire engine with an extinguisher", which he invented together with a chief fire officer from Berlin.
