SUMMARY:The vulnerable democracy. Strategies against populist takeover
DESCRIPTION:We continue to view our democracy as invulnerable, while populists in Europe and around the world are actively undermining liberal legal systems. The enemies of democratic diversity exploit the law, claiming to represent the true interests of the people. What is the real threat to Germany?\nMaximilian Steinbeis, a lawyer and a leading expert on constitutional matters, uses the example of Thuringia to show how populists might dismantle the liberal state by manipulating laws and institutions: schools and universities, the judiciary and police, the media, and the arts. Time is running out to protect our freedoms from these attacks.\nMaximilian Steinbeis, lawyer, author, and publisher of Verfassungsblog, a forum at the intersection of law and journalism. As head of the Thuringia Project, he has conducted extensive research into the potential consequences of an authoritarian-populist party, like the AfD, gaining state power. His findings form the basis of his latest book.\nModeration: Apl. Prof. Dr. Felix Heidenreich, International Center for Cultural and Technological Studies at the University of Stuttgart (IZKT)\nThe event will be held in the English language and is part of the project "Democratic Society and Totalitarian Challenge," in cooperation with the Evangelical Educational Center Hospitalhof Stuttgart.
