   In 1856, Speke and Richard Burton were commissioned by the Royal Geoghraphical Society to lead an expedition to East Africa to find the Great Lakes. Speke became the first European to see Lake Victoria in 1858. 1860-1861, he took part in a second journey to the source of the Nile.
