On 14 July 2017, the University of Stuttgart's first small satellite was launched from Baikonur in Kazakhstan. Since then, it has been successful operated from the control center of the Institute of Space Systems (IRS) at the University of Stuttgart.

The Flying Laptop was developed, built and qualified at the University of Stuttgart mainly by doctoral students and students. In addition to federal and state funding, there was plenty of support for the project from industry and research institutions. The tasks of the Flying Laptop in orbit, in addition to multi-spectral earth observation, include the detection of Near Earth Objects, as well as contributing to the identification of shipping traffic by receiving ship signals. The satellite will also test a large number of new technologies under space conditions. These include a new on-board computer system, an innovative unfolding mechanism for the solar panels as well as the FPGA-based payload computer, which gave the Flying Laptop its name.
