With the implementation of the European directives into their domestic environmental laws and investments in a scale of 70 billion Euro, Turkey has already taken important steps towards a preventive and after caring environmental protection. But the challenges are far greater. Just the costs of modernizing their waste management amount to around 10 billion Euros. In addition, modern waste management solutions are being handicapped by the serious absence of skilled professionals, particularly in the communes.

Considering this background, the participants from ministries, governmental agencies, scientific institutions, business and associations, and representatives of metropolitan cities and regions, cities and communities of both countries will discuss beside general environmental issues, problems related to the closed substance cycle waste management recycling and their approaches. The program also considers the management of hazardous waste, the operation and rehabilitation of landfills and the financing of waste management measures. Among the annunciated speakers are Prof. Rita Süßmuth (retired Federal Minister and President of the German Bundestag), Prof. Klaus Töpfer (retired Federal Environment Minister, former Executive Director of the Environment Programme of the United Nations (UNEP) and founding director of the IASS in Potsdam) and Prof. Martin Faulstich (Chairman of the Advisory Council for Environmental Matters). Within the scope of the conference there will be practical oriented exhibition of German and Turkish companies as well as a scientific poster session. Following the event, a two-day field trip to waste treatment facilities is offered.
