University of Stuttgart welcomed the new students

At the beginning of the lecture on 14 th October 2013, University (vice)-rector Prof. Hans-Joachim Werner welcomed around 1,800 guests who had attended the first semester evening “Avete Academici“ (Welcome, academics) at the University of Stuttgart. After a greeting by Dr. Michael Münter, Head of the Department of Coordination and Planning of the Stuttgart Lord Mayor, the student representatives Lisa Wolf and Benjamin Maschler likewise welcomed their new fellow students. Entertainment was provided by the group “HeilixSpässle – Impro Comedy“ of the Studium Generale as well as the Big Band from the university.

Once again the focal point of the first semester evening was the new students getting to know each other. Furthermore, the new students were able to make contacts in the market of possibilities in the foyer of the “Liederhalle” with professors, university staff and students from higher semesters. In so doing around 40 university facilities and student initiatives introduced themselves, from the academic “Fliegergruppe” and the alumni network to the debating club to the university radio horads 88,6.

Awarding scholarships and prizes
In the framework of the first semester evening several students were once again honoured for their excellent work:
The prize for special student commitment was awarded to ten students this year for the work in the “FaVeVe and FaVeVe (+)“ and in the project group to introduce the student body (STUVUS)” possibly composed since 2012. The composed student representation of the University of Stuttgart were able to take up their work thanks to the extraordinary commitment of the students in the winter semester 2013 and with this as one of the first in Baden-Württemberg. The prize winners “ FaVeVe (+) are: Mark Dornbach, Kira Laage, Max Landeck, Benjamin Maschler, Marc Mühlberg and Benjamin Maschler. From the project group Emre Aydiner, Dominik Schlechtweg, Anne Silberzahn, Marc Mühlberg and Karim Halim were honoured. The honoured students will each receive 400 Euros.
The DAAD Prize for excellent work performed by foreign students amounting to 1,000 Euros was awarded to Jajnabalkya Guhathakurta due to his excellent student work (MSc INFOTECH) and his social commitment in various fields of the university.
The prize from the Anton and Klara-Röser Foundation endowed with 500 Euros was awarded to Tobias Gruber, Johannes Pfeiffer, Matthias Schweikardt from the Bachelor study course electrical engineering and information technology for the best course of study in the first two semesters.

The prize from Eugen and Irmgard Hahn Foundation for Technical Design this year went to Andrea Hein for her excellent student research project. The prize is endowed with 1,000 Euros. A recognition for technical design amounting to 300 Euros was awarded to Mercedes Barkmeyer.

Shen Zeng was distinguished for his excellent master thesis with the prize by the Union of Alumni of the study course Technical Cybernetics at the University of Stuttgart e.V. (Kyb-Alumni). The prize is endowed with 300 Euros. Janine Günther was awarded the prize by the Union of Kyb Alumni endowed with 200 Euros for her excellent bachelor thesis.
This year the Development Fund Medical Technology awarded five other scholarships to the value of 4,800 Euros each per year to highly gifted students in the course of studies medical technology. Two scholarships are financed by the company Erbe Elektromedizin GmbH and each one scholarship by LS medcap GmbH, MAQUET Cardiopulmonary AG as well as Karl Storz GmbH & Co. KG. In total 19 funded fellowships were financed. The following first semester students received a scholarship: Hannah Bott, Johannes Heym, Jennifer Erb, Loana Penner and Simon Krafft.

The study award by the Friedrich-und-Elisabeth-Boysen Foundation amounting to 5,000 Euros was awarded to Dr. Iosif Mariakakis, former Institute of Sanitary Engineering, Water Quality and Waste Management, for his dissertation in the field of Environmental Technology.
