The Institute of Art History is pleased to announce a new discussion series in cooperation with the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart and the Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design.
Topic: Art = Activism?
Works of art have only shown the world differently, but what matters is to change it. Thus, loosely based on Karl Marx, the premise of this year's major exhibitions, from documenta to the Berlin Biennale, can be summarized. Does contemporary art have to become an activist practice in order to be effective? But what kind of effectiveness is at stake? And what does activism (in) art mean?
The following experts will be joining the discussion:
Karen van den Berg (Professor of art theory and staging practice, Zeppelin Universität, Friedrichshafen),
María Linares (Artist, Berlin)
Michael Lüthy (Professor of Modern and Contemporary Art History, ABK Stuttgart)
Anne Vieth (Curator, Kunstmuseum Stuttgart)
About the series:
»Cancel Culture«- and identity debates, migration and globalization, artificial intelligence and digitalization, ecology and sustainability – today, cultural institutions and museums are also taking a stand on current social or political issues. Four times a year, the new discourse series "mittendrin" invites artists, scientists, and activists to discuss topics that have not yet been thought through to the end, that are extremely relevant, or that pose a challenge.
