Prof. Dr. Jochen Liske, University of Hamburg, Hamburg Observatory
Although astronomy is one of the oldest scientific disciplines, it nevertheless continues to deliver surprises and new realizations. The discovery of exoplanets, dark energy and gravitational waves have made it clear that we are a long way from having witnessed everything the universe has to offer. But emboldened from the successes of the last 20 years, astronomers are currently developing a new generation of super telescopes that will help them advance further into the mysteries of the universe than ever before. This lecture will introduce this flagship project and explain the scientific matters it is intending to investigate.
