Our bodies comprise numerous different cells that work together to help our organs function. But did you know that these cells actively decide to commit suicide? Did you know that our immune system sends messages throughout the body to deliberately kill its own cells? This happens daily in all of us. And not only in older people, it even happens during our development in the womb. While you have been reading this text, thousands of your cells have died. A rough estimate is 10 million each day. And this is a good thing, it doesn’t just happen at random in a healthy body. But how does this machinery of death actually work? And why is it important for us to understand this process, in order to understand and treat tumors?
