Reading has always been in a state of flux. For a long time, reading was a sacred act, reserved only for priests and those initiated in such circles. In a secularized form, reading was only of interest to military officers and administrators. The first reading revolution came with the invention of printing. Even today, reading is changing. New technologies and social contexts raise the question of what the future of reading will look like. Concentrated reading could become a niche existence, relegated to the fringes like horse riding, which was once part of everyday life and has become a privilege. Or are we merely experiencing a pluralization of reading? How are culture and the technology of reading related?
Cultural scientist Prof. Dr. Julika Griem and literary editor at S. Fischer Verlag, Dr. Sascha Michel, will be discussing this. Moderation: Prof. Dr. Torsten Hoffmann, University of Stuttgart
Organized by: IZKT at the University of Stuttgart, Literaturhaus Stuttgart
