Prof. Balthasar Novák, Institute for Lightweight Structures and Conceptual Design (ILEK) at the University of Stuttgart: Fit for the future – how to make bridges secure

As always, two speakers will be appearing at the Stuttgarter Zeitung's Reader Uni. The first lecture will focus on bridge construction: after the catastrophic collapse of a motorway bridge in Genoa caused a number of deaths, Germany has also begun to reconsider the safety of its bridges. For this lecture, Balthasar Novák, an expert in bridge construction from the University of Stuttgart, has selected the topic “Fit for the future – how to make bridges safe”.

Bridges built between the early '60s and the mid-'80s require the most work. If serious hazards are discovered during routine maintenance, there several possible options to choose from: maintenance work, reinforcement, or demolition and new construction. In order to maintain existing bridges, Prof. Novák also pursues more unconventional ways, which he will introduce in this lecture.
