Hardly any other technical development has had such a huge impact on our daily lives as the computer. In the past we have got used to such devices continuously decreasing in size and becoming more efficient, but this is no longer the case. Only completely new technologies could now improve commuter efficiency. Quantum computers are a new class of device. They use quantum physics to process information in an entirely new way and have the potential to carry out certain tasks much more efficiently and quickly than any other machine. However, the technical challenges are enormous. Until now, only prototypes with limited abilities have been built. When can we expect the first quantum computer to be on the market?
