The issues encountered during translation expose the difficulties of intercultural understanding. On their journey from one language to another, context and connotations face getting lost along the way. This is particularly problematic when it comes to the Japanese and German languages – between two very different languages and traditions. Ryosuke Ohashi is one of the most influential Japanese philosophers of the time. For many years he has been influencing and enriching exchanges with Germany. His work on phenomenology and aesthetic has gained worldwide renown. In July 1990, he was awarded the Philipp Franz von Siebold prize and in March 1996, he received the Humboldt medal. In this lecture he will be examining the question of what it means to think in Japanese or German.

This event is organized by the University of Stuttgart’s IZKT, in cooperation with the Stuttgart City Library and the Berthold Leibinger Foundation.
