The future will be decided in the cities; this is where the issues of non-sustainable lifestyles and economic strategies are dramatically intensifying. However, the enormous pressure of these issues has created an opportunity for fundamental change. But this won’t happen by itself, and all too frequently, the status quo seems to be set in stone. To get things moving, we need methods and processes that focus on the future. This has the potential to catalyze new experimental ideas that might cleverly undercut existing structures and logic and systematize fantasy.

The renowned Dutch political scientist and city planner Maarten Hajer explains how fiction is paramount to urban development. As the long-time director of The Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency and author of numerous bestsellers, his work is based at the interface between politics, urban planning and art, science and civil society: he understands the importance of modernization, discourse coalitions and a plan of action and is not only able to demonstrate how cultural and technical design ideas can be integrated, but also which regulatory and control approaches are the most promising. As Professor of Urban Futures, Hajer will explain how the future can be integrated into the present. He draws on his experience in scientific analysis and political consultation and combines this with artistic aspects to open new horizons.

This event is organized by the IZKT and the Institute of Social Sciences at the University of Stuttgart, in cooperation with the Stuttgart City Library.
