“Capitalism has turned us into a society of rottweilers”: Paul Collier, one of the most renowned economists of our times, presents his manifesto for a renewed form of capitalism. His diagnosis: it is not only about wealth distribution between the poor and the rich, a much more dangerous factor has created a tear in the fabric of our society – between the urban metropolises and the rest of the country, between the most urban elite and the majority of the population. An individualist ideology is rife, one which insists on autonomy, target consumption and dismisses the idea of mutual obligations. According to Collier, “The rottweiler society is losing its sense of social cohesion”– and populists and ideologists are rapidly filling the void. Collier passionately condemns this new social and cultural divide and presents a very personal manifesto in favor of social capitalism that is based on a new form of social ethics.
Paul Collier is Professor of Economics and Director of the "Centre for the Study of African Economies" at Oxford University. For many years, he has been researching the world’s poorest countries and investigating the correlations between poverty, war and migration. His book »Die unterste Milliarde« (2008) drew international acclaim and has received a number of awards.
