European integration has led to a unique transfer of authority at supranational institutions. The EU has become a place of political decision-making, where citizens are increasingly shaping power; but the idea of an “ever close union” has received much criticism. With six months to go before European elections in 2019, this lecture will discuss the “democratic deficits” of the EU using current research findings. What are the consequences of European integration for the representative democracy in Europe? In what ways have this process influenced the operating modes of democracy in its member states? Is the EU as a supranational system democratic? What consequences will the various crises (institutional crises, economic, immigration, increasing euro scepticism, the Brexit referendum) have for democracy in the EU?

By invitation of Prof. Dr. Patrick Bernhagen, Institute of Social Sciences.
This event is sponsored by the Robert Bosch Foundation, with funds from the DVA Foundation.

This lecture will be held in German.
