For the planning of the Werkbund settlement, Mies van der Rohe gathered leading colleagues from the European avantgarde in Stuttgart Weissenhof in 1927. Many of the concepts developed there later informed the “Athens Charter” - a manifesto of architecture and urban planning.
Nowadays, we are battling with the legacy of this modernist twentieth century. Crises in ever faster succession, together with pressing ecological and social challenges are fundamentally calling our lives and economies into question. Like one hundred years ago, we find ourselves in a period of transition once more. But what future, what type of planning and design would be considered "modern" nowadays?
Based on the survey of the situation at Stuttgart Weissenhof in an urban planning competition and the public discussion of the findings, this international symposium will look at how to approach the legacy of Modernism in terms of construction and the history of ideas.
Organized by: Internationale Bauausstellung 2027 StadtRegion Stuttgart (IBA‘27 GmbH and IBA‘27-Friends e.V.) in cooperation with the Institute for Principles of Modern Architecture (Design and Theory) (IGmA) at the University of Stuttgart and the Wüstenrot Stiftung.
The event is part of the Stuttgart Science Festival 2022
