The center of East Berlin is one of the main works of urban socialist-influenced post-war architecture, so-called East Modernism. This urban ensemble draws together architectural, structural engineering, and urban spatial aspects: its buildings were predominantly prefabricated. Its central axis, which (as a central element) brings together ribbon-like historical streets, forms representative functional areas and squares.
