In the event series “Wissenschaftsfragen” (Science Questions), organized by the IZKT, the Literaturhaus Stuttgart and the Akademie für gesprochenes Wort, host Joachim Kalka will be speaking to Horst Bredekamp. As an art historian, Bredekamp is more than qualified to speak about the fundamental issues and current topics in his discipline – as the name of the series promises. It is not only the stupendous breadth of his publications – which encompass everything from the Gardens of Bomarzo or the history of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, iconoclasm, and “Artists as Criminals”, but also his strong media and organizational commitment – whether in his role as speaker at the cluster of excellence “Bild Wissen Gestaltung. An Interdisciplinary Laboratory”, or as one of three founding directors of the Humboldt Forum – that set Horst Bredekamp apart.
Among the publications that position themselves at the interface between art history and scientific history, beautifully demonstrating the extended scope of the science of art, are three monographies that deserve particular attention, involving the title page of Hobbes’ Leviathan, Leibniz’s Monadology and “Darwin’s Corals”. This connection and his formulation of a theory of “Image Acts” will be the focus of this discussion.
