Women gained the right to vote in Germany exactly 100 years ago, in 1918. Marking the 100th anniversary of this historical event, Service Gender Consulting in cooperation with uni-film e. V., will be screening the Swiss film “The Divine Order”, directed by Petra Biondina.

The film focuses on women’s suffrage in Switzerland and premiered on March 9, 2017 in the German-speaking part of Switzerland. It was released in German cinemas on August 3, 2017.

Historical background: Women in Switzerland gained the right to vote after a referendum was held on February 7, 1971. Switzerland was the last European country to grant women equal voting rights. Although, the principality of Liechtenstein took even longer, finally granting women the right to vote in 1984.

However, even in Switzerland it took another 20 years before women in all cantons were granted the right to vote: on November 27 1990, women from the canton Appenzell Innerrhoden filed a lawsuit at the Swiss Federal Court, and won. The local cantonal constitution didn’t include women’s right to vote even in 1990(!).

The film will be preceded by a short historical introduction. Further information can be found in the attached flyer.

This film screening will be in German.

The screening is free of charge and registration is not required.
