In this dialogue, cultural scientists Chan-fai Cheung and Gerhold Becker analyse the unique encounters between China and Europe in the early modern period and explain how intellectual and social behaviours were responsible for the failures of such encounters. The scientists, however, recognize the exemplary quality of the expectations, projections and misunderstandings of certain encounters between these two cultures.

Prof. Dr. Michael-Jörg Oesterle (University of Stuttgart) will be opeing the evening with a welcome speech. Prof. Dr. Chan-fai Cheung is associate professor of philosophy at the Chinese University in Hongkong and Honorary Professor at the Department of Social Science, Hang Seng Management College in Hongkong. Prof. Dr. Gerhold Becker also teaches at the post-graduate school of philosophy at the Assumption University in Bangkok, Thailand. He also held the chair of religious philosophy at the Hong Kong Baptist University.

The event will be held in German and English.

Organized by the IZKT, this dialogue is part of the Fern Ost-Fests (FOF), organized by the University of Stuttgart in cooperation with the HEAD Foundation.
