2019 was an anniversary year for Alexander von Humboldt in Germany. Since then, he has been rediscovered as the “second Columbus” of (Latin) America. But little attention was paid to the fact that that he also surveyed Europe. Because of his studies of Lake Valencia in Venezuela (1799), Humboldt must be viewed as a pioneer of the environmental movement. The lectures take a critical look at the reception of this topic and also refers to the »Humboldt Cantate« by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy.
