Prof. Dr. Markus Jager, Hannover
Dealing with profane churches since the reformation

About the lecture:
There has been a rapid increase in the number of churches no longer being used for religious purposes and this has recently been the cause of much debate. At first glance this might seem to have come about due to the secularization of society, but it can actually be traced back much further. Large numbers of churches in Europe have been used for non-religious purposes since the 16th century. This lecture will look at the history of repurposed church buildings, considering the phenomenon not only from the perspective of a history of defeat, but also as a process of creative acquisition that is a source of valuable information for the current debate.
