On its third anniversary, the research group “Material Culture and Consumer Behavior in the Pre-Modern Era” will be exploring the topics of storing, transporting and taking inventory. We will be looking at objects in ordered arrangements. It is when first seen in this context that the objects become cultural goods as it is this context that gives them their sense and meaning. Starting with this basic assumption from the field of cultural studies research, this conference will be shedding some light on how objects behave and their surrounding ordered arrangements. The thematic will be dedicated to the storage of objects, their transport and the meaning of inventories and lists as a source of material research.

The research group “Material Culture and Consumer Behavior in the Pre-Modern Era” was founded in Wolfenbüttel in 2016 and is part of the DFG-sponsored network “Material Culture and Consumer Behavior in Europe in the Early Modern Period. Objects – circulations – acquisitions”, an interdisciplinary forum for discussing current questions of culture and consumer goods research. The annual conference 2018 is organized in cooperation with the International Center for Cultural and Technological Research (IZKT) at the University of Stuttgart, the Central State Archive, the dem Landesmuseum Württemberg and the Württembergischen Kunstverein. The project is financed by the IZKT and the Association of Friends of the Historical Institute at the University of Stuttgart.
