„Beyond the Mirror Image: Sience, Art and the Nature of Understanding“

Prof. Dr. Catherine Elgin (University of Harward, Boston).

Max Bense (1910-1990) was the first guest professor in philosophy to be appointed at the University of Stuttgart. His work and teaching fused scientific theory, logical, aesthetical and semiotic approaches. Both within the university and beyond, his progressive thinking combined science, art and philosophy and had an enormous influence on the writers, artists and musicians, who went on to develop the Stuttgarter Schule style. He also drew inspiration from new technical developments, particularly in the field of computer science. This led to pioneering work in the field of computer art.

The Institute of Philosophy, in cooperation with the Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design, has been holding the Max Bense Lectures in Aesthetics since the 2016 summer semester. The aim of this lecture series is to tie in with the Stuttgarter Schule style and encourage dialogue between the fields of art and science.

Event language: English
