Swimming and splashing in rivers and ponds in the middle of the city? This might be a tempting thought, but in the 20th century people have learnt to accept that swimming in urban waters is not possible because they are either inaccessible or too dirty. But in this era of evermore densely populated and overheated cities, reclaiming the open space in, on and around urban waters would dramatically improve our quality of life. Antje Stokman, Professor of Architecture and Landscape at the HafenCity University Hamburg, teaches and researches urban water landscapes.
