Ein Architekt doesn’t learn by visiting the Bauhaus University, he learns from the construction site: Ernst Neufert

In 1956, the magazine Bauwelt (published 25/1956, p. 593) reported that “… Professsor Ernst Neufert, the writer of the famous work ‘Bauentwurfslehre’, has been issued a pilot’s license for flying private planes… “. Neufert learnt to fly in order to visit his numerous project construction sites, which were spread across Germany.
As a flying architect, he learnt that it wasn’t so much school and university – in his case the Bauhaus University in Weimar – but rather from the unique conditions found at each construction site. This lecture will focus on the effect of the observation of planning and construction on buildings of that era.
