Literary culture is facing paradoxical times – at least in France, this “nation littéraire” (Priscilla Parkurst-Ferguson). On the one hand, there has never been so many new and varied publications; but on the other hand, intellectuals are still circulating the idea of the possible death, or at the very least the catastrophic decline, of literature. This lecture will focus on the various manifestations and reasons for this paradox. The reasons are diverse, not only in terms of form, but also of context and stem from school and universities that propagate the myth of a “nation of literature”.
