Professor Dr. Ingrid Gilcher-Holtey, Professor of Contemporary History at the University of Bielefeld, says of the lecture: the spring 2018 edition of the European cultural journal Lettre Internationale, termed May 1968 as “Die Zeit des Möglichen” (the era of possibilities). The Berlin daily newspaper taz named an essay released on the 50th anniversary of the protests of 1968 “Die Magie der Träume” (the magic of dreams). Our perspective of 1968 is changing. Judging the protest movement as “culturally successful, but a political failure”, until now been tempered with such phrases as “a fortunate failure” or “thank God we lost”, is being replaced by a new political perspective and social imagining of 1968. To mark the 50th anniversary of the revolution, Professor Dr. Gilcher-Holtey will be focusing on the following questions: what fascinates us? What remains of 1968? What has had a long-term effect and might shape the future?
