Stuttgart engineering sciences once again highly rated

In the latest Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) by Shanghai Ranking, the University of Stuttgart has once again achieved impressive results for its research performance.

According to GRAS 2025, the University of Stuttgart ranks among the top 200 universities worldwide in engineering sciences, with strong performances across six specific subject areas. In the subject Aerospace Engineering, the University of Stuttgart ranks 46th worldwide for the first time. The subjects Automation & Control, Metallurgical Engineering, and Robotic Science & Engineering are among the top 100 (ranks 76–100). Water Resources is listed among the top 150, Biotechnology among the top 200. The University of Stuttgart is also listed in the natural sciences with the subject Mathematics among the top 200.

In a national comparison, the University of Stuttgart ranks first in the subject Automation & Control, together with the Technical University of Munich and the University of Duisburg-Essen. It achieved the best rating, first place, in the “World Class Output” category, which includes publications in top journal papers and international academic awards. In the subjects Aerospace Engineering and Water Resources, it ranks second nationwide, and in the subject Metallurgical Engineering, it ranks third, together with the Technical University of Darmstadt.

About the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects

Published annually since 2017, the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects by Shanghai Ranking evaluates the research performance of universities worldwide in the fields of natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences, and social sciences. This year, more than 2,000 of 5,000 universities from 100 countries were considered for the ranking. The universities are evaluated in five categories: “World-Class Faculty,” “World-Class Output,” “High-Quality Research,” “Research Impact,” and “International Collaboration.”

Four new indicators were introduced in the “World-Class Faculty” category: International Academic Award Laureates, Highly Cited Researchers, Editors of International Academic Journals, and Leaders of International Academic Organizations. The “World-Class Output” category includes top journal papers and international academic awards. The “High-Quality Research” category includes the number of journal papers. The “Research Impact” category includes citations, and the “International Collaboration” category includes international collaboration on publications.
