Copper conducts electricity, rubber is elastic, and glass is transparent. But why is this so? A material's properties depend primarily on its chemical composition and structure. Changes, such as in the arrangement of atoms, can alter the properties. Material designers use this to specifically develop materials with certain desired properties.
Semi Kim, a doctoral student at the Institute of Polymer Chemistry, is conducting research on new materials for robotics: She is developing what are known as multifunctional soft actuators. These are flexible materials that respond to external stimuli and can move or deform in a specific way. She uses a water-rich hydrogel as the base material and wants to add a special feature: electrical conductivity.
Through her research, Semi Kim aims to advance the field of so-called “soft robots.” These multifunctional soft actuators could, for example, pave the way for the development of soft robotic hands capable of grasping delicate objects. Other applications for the new material are also conceivable, for example in the field of “intelligent wearables.” In the field of medical technology, Semi Kim's material could be used for artificial muscles, soft prosthetics, or smart bandages.
Originally from South Korea, Semi moved to Germany to study Material Sciences and then decided to stay to pursue her doctoral dissertation in Polymer Materials Science. What ultimately convinced her to study in Stuttgart was that the University of Stuttgart is one of the TU9 – the nine leading technical universities in Germany. She feels so at home in her adopted city that she can easily imagine making it her permanent home.
