Nobelstraße will be open to traffic again starting March 28

March 19, 2026

Temporary traffic changes were due to an infrastructure project to improve energy efficiency at the University of Stuttgart and the High-Performance Computing Center Stuttgart (HLRS)

Starting Saturday, March 28, Nobelstraße on the Vaihingen campus will be open to traffic again between the “Im Birkhof” intersection and the pedestrian and bike path leading to the Hochschule der Medien. The sidewalks will be reopened at a later date.

The disruption was due to the construction of a new supply channel, part of a large-scale infrastructure initiative aimed at enhancing energy efficiency across the university. The project also supports the High-Performance Computing Center Stuttgart (HLRS), a key facility for advanced research and innovation.

Waste heat is fed into the Vaihingen campus district heating network

A new building, HLRS III, is currently being constructed on the south side of Nobelstrasse to house HLRS's next mainframe computer. A new center will collect the waste heat generated in HLRS III and in the existing HLRS computer room at Nobelstrasse 19 and feed it into the Vaihingen campus district heating network. The new pipes in the supply duct under Nobelstrasse will transport this waste heat to the campus.

The new infrastructure is expected to cover a significant portion of the university's heating requirements during winter months and provide more than enough process heat for the entire campus during the the summer. This will help to reduce the University of Stuttgart's energy consumption and associated heating costs, contributing to its sustainability efforts.
