How do universities rank internationally in their individual disciplines? The British company Quacquarelli Symonds Limited (QS) provides the answers with its annual subject rankings. The 2026 edition is based on an analysis of around 6,300 universities.
Mechanical engineering, aeronautical engineering, and manufacturing engineering rank in the top 4%
For the “Engineering – Mechanical, Aeronautical & Manufacturing” category, for which QS also uses the historical term “Mechanical Engineering”, around 1,800 universities worldwide were analyzed. In this discipline, the University of Stuttgart ranks 68th and is among the top 4% of institutions worldwide.
Architecture ranks in the top 6%
In architecture, QS surveyed around 1,300 universities; the architecture program at the University of Stuttgart ranks in the 51–100 range and is among the top 6% worldwide.
“I am pleased that we are once again ranked among the top groups internationally in the current QS rankings for architecture, mechanical engineering, aeronautical engineering, and manufacturing engineering,” says Prof. Manfred Bischoff, Vice-Rector for Research and Sustainable Development at the University of Stuttgart. “This also reflects our approach of consistently pursuing sustainability through our research in these socially relevant fields and advancing sustainable, resource-efficient solutions in manufacturing, aviation, and construction,” he continues.
QS World University Rankings by Subject
The QS WUR by Subject is one of the most important international university rankings. It evaluates the performance of universities as well as their departments and academic programs based on five criteria: (1) academic reputation, (2) citation frequency of research publications, (3) volume of publications and citation impact (h-index), (4) international research collaborations, and (5) standing or reputation among employers. Depending on the department, QS assigns different weights to these parameters. As in previous years, this year’s edition of the ranking covers five subject groups comprising 55 disciplines.
