The University of Stuttgart is renowned for cutting-edge research and high-quality teaching. It offers not only high-quality study programs, but also the opportunity to complete a varied and exciting apprenticeship in an international working environment.

Jasmin Hertel chose an apprenticeship at the University of Stuttgart - with great success. She completed her apprenticeship as a materials tester as one of the best 26 from the Stuttgart region and received an award from the Stuttgart Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI).

The award is also significant for the University of Stuttgart, because attracting and retaining well-trained professionals is an important part of university research operations.

Anyone who decides to train as a materials tester, like Jasmin Hertel, should have a good understanding of technology and science as well as good grades in STEM subjects. Good German and English skills are also beneficial.

An apprenticeship as a materials tester at the research and teaching-oriented Institute of Polymer Technology (IKT) Stuttgart is characterized by a high degree of practical experience. In addition to physical, chemical, mechanical and technological tests and test series, the apprentices are sometimes required to do real detective work, for example finding out whether material failure was the cause of the problem in case of damage. Together with their supervisors, skilled workers, and doctoral students/professors, the apprentices analyze, investigate and discuss a wide range of issues, from "simple" bio-mulch film and suitable materials for fuel cells to high-tech plastics for automotive and aircraft construction.

The close cooperation not only ensures that apprentices are closely involved in the research work of the IKT; it also simultaneously promotes the merging of university theory and industrial practice and thus mutual understanding. A cooperation with the Stuttgart Materials Testing Institute (MPA) ensures that the focus of the apprenticeship is expanded to include not only plastics, but also metals. Long-standing contact and cooperation with industrial partners also provide the opportunity to expand and consolidate the knowledge acquired with the industry partners during the apprenticeship.
