Code of Conduct – Respect is smart

March 9, 2022

Respectful interaction with one another is the maxim of the University of Stuttgart. The Code of Conduct shall serve as a guideline and self-commitment at the university for how to treat each other.

The University of Stuttgart is a place of diversity, and it has therefore made it its mission to provide all students, faculty, researchers, administrative staff, and guests of the university with a study, working, and living environment that allows them freedom of thought and expression and enables them to reach their full potential.

"At the University of Stuttgart, we are committed to treating each other with respect - regardless of all the differences that define us and enrich us as a community," states Prof. Silke Wieprecht, Vice Rector of Diversity and Internationalization. "We will continue to work towards achieving this goal."

This goal demands that we all work together. The “Code of Conduct – Respect is smart” is intended to underline this. This serves as a guideline for interacting with each other at the University of Stuttgart and, at the same time, it clearly defines which behaviors are unacceptable.

Treating each other fairly, regardless of status, gender, origin, skin color, religion, ideology, age, health impairment or sexual orientation, forms the basis of all interactions in our community. An academic environment needs space for exchanging opinions and ideas that is free of discrimination of all kinds. With the Code of Conduct, the University of Stuttgart accepts its responsibility to create an environment in which everyone is safe, and where interactions are characterized by respect for each other.

The Code of Conduct was developed as part of a wide-sweeping, transparent and democratic process, in which all status groups, from students to employees to professors, were able to participate. Everyone involved in the constructive process of creating this Code of Conduct contributed their expertise and experience in the areas of studying at university, teaching, research, technology, and administration. Even in the early stages of its development, many members of our university were already aware of the Code of Conduct and it was met with a high level of acceptance. This jointly developed Code of Conduct was approved by the Rectorate and the Senate.
