The energy management system (EnMS) of the Technical Information and Communication Services (TIK) at the University of Stuttgart has been successfully certified according to the international standard ISO 50001:2018, by independent environmental auditor Thorsten Grantner of OmniCert Umweltgutachter GmbH. This certification involved the implementation of a management system, establishing energy guidelines, and adopting a comprehensive action plan with concrete goals and measures for energy reductions and efficiency. In doing so, TIK supports the University of Stuttgart in implementing its sustainability strategy and meets the requirements of the Energy Efficiency Act for data centers of public institutions.

SUSTAINABILITY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF STUTTGART

In its energy guidelines, TIK commits to increasing its energy efficiency and minimizing the associated environmental impacts within its technical and economic capabilities. In TIK’s "Action Plan 2025 to 2030", optimization measures to increase energy efficiency and savings were defined for IT systems, cooling, waste heat utilization, as well as office and common areas. Progress toward the targets is regularly monitored and documented using energy performance indicators. To ensure a continuous improvement process, TIK conducts annual internal audits. This allows deficiencies to be identified and corrected in a timely manner, and opportunities for improvement to be recognized and implemented promptly.

An energy management officer and an energy team have been appointed to maintain and further develop the management system. With ISO 50001, TIK relies on a continuous improvement process to enhance energy efficiency and comply with legal requirements.

The Technical Information and Communication Services (TIK) are a central IT service unit at the University of Stuttgart. TIK operates the IT infrastructure for the university and provides services to research partners across Baden-Württemberg and beyond.
