2026 THE Subject Rankings: Stuttgart engineering sciences among the top 8% worldwide

According to the World University Rankings by Subject published by Times Higher Education (THE), engineering sciences at the University of Stuttgart rank among the top 8 percent in the world. Physics has also achieved a significant success in international comparisons.

In the 2026 Times Higher Education World University Rankings by Subject (THE WUR by Subject), the subject area of engineering sciences of the University of Stuttgart maintained its strong international position. It ranked 125th out of 1,555 universities evaluated and is therefore among the top 8% worldwide. The subject “physical sciences” at the University of Stuttgart also achieved a notable success: it ranked 91st out of 1,497 in the “industry” indicator and is therefore among the top 6% globally.

The excellent results of the engineering sciences at the University of Stuttgart in the THE WUR by Subject are based primarily on a strong research environment, high-quality teaching, and intensive collaboration with industry. In these categories, the University of Stuttgart ranks among the top 7% worldwide and even among the top 2% in the “industry” category.

The “industry” indicator is also rated particularly highly in the “physical sciences”. The decisive factors here are both the external funding secured and the number of patents citing research results from Stuttgart scientists. Ranked 91st out of 1,497, the University of Stuttgart is among the top 6% worldwide in this category.
